The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) just released a video about CAR-T treatment breakthrough. The video features Austin Scheutz, one of the early trial patients treated with CAR-T after chemotherapy and a bone marrow treatment failed to successfully beat back his leukemia. Watch the video HERE.
CAR-T (Chimeric Antigen Receptor) uses a patient's own immune system to track down and kill cancer cells. T-cells, the body's immune cells are removed and reprogrammed using the HIV virus to recognize and target a patient's cancerous B-cells.
This breakthrough treatment has had a significant positive impact on many patients. In Austin's case, he is cancer-free after all other treatments have failed.
CAR-T research was supported by LLS funding. The trials were developed in Philadelphia and are now available in other cancer treatment centers, including the UW Carbone Cancer Center. Fundraising by the Lymphomaniacs supports research and patient services that would otherwise be unsupported. Thank you to all our supporters who are helping to save lives!
The 2017 outdoor riding season starts Saturday, April 8 with a team ride to Paoli from the UW Arboretum. The route is primarily on paved bike trails with a few miles on Madison and county roads. The ride to Paoli is a classic Dane County route and is very popular.
We will be starting at the Longnecker Visitor Center parking lot and biking on Seminole Highway to the Cannonball and Badger State bike trails. The trails are auto-free and flat. There are a few hills to keep us honest but before you know it we'll be in Paoli where we can relax before heading back. This is a great first team ride, good for cyclists of all levels and a perfect route to kick off our training season for Scenic Shore!
Check out the full team training calendar.
As of January 9, the team has 85 riders registered for the 25th Annual Scenic Shore 150 Bike Tour. This puts us way ahead of 2016 -- 66 had signed up by this date last year.
A special welcome goes out to our 19 new Scenic Shore riders! We love first-time Scenic Shore riders and are very happy to have them on the team.
And, welcome back to our 66 returning riders! That's a return rate, so far, of 82%.
Finally, we have 36 returning Sprinters (raised $1,000 or more) from 2016! Our Sprinters raised almost $64,000 of the $83,500 total last year.
As we head into the new season and towards our $100,000 goal, remember that the support from our donors is helping to save lives and improve the quality of life for blood cancer patients.
All Lymphomaniacs, friends & family, & riders who want to learn more about the Scenic Shore 150 bike ride are invited to our 4th Annual Team Party! This is the official kickoff of the 2017 Scenic Shore season -- the 25th year of this great event.
Special Registration Deals for Dec 3! (Good even for those who can't make it to the party!)

Post ride at UW Manitowoc, we gather in our BELIEVE t-shirts. The names of our honorees are on the back...we ride for them.
Lymphomaniacs teammate Kathie Smith-Zaremba passed away Sunday, June 19, 2016 from a very aggressive cancer she discovered in May. We will miss her smile, sense of humor, intelligence, and friendliness. Kathie was a strong rider and successful fundraiser for blood cancer research.
The 2016 Lymphomaniacs extend our prayers and thoughts to Kathie's family and friends.
Kathie's family suggests donations to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Please consider a donation via her Scenic Shore 150 fundraising page as a good way to honor her memory. Donate HERE
As a team we dedicate our 150-mile ride to her.
